AnakBayan Seattle Celebrates 5th Anniversary of Organizing and Empowering Filipino American Youth in the Seattle Area with an Evening of Multimedia Presentations, and Education
BACKGROUND: November 30th marks the birthday of Filipino revolutionary, Andres Bonifacio, who was a leader in the revolution of the Philippines against Spanish colonial rulethe first revolution in Asia against European colonialism. In 1892, he with other determined Filipinos founded the Katipunan, which would later become the core of the Philippine Revolution Army that would eventually defeat the Spanish armies and declare independence on June 12, 1898.
November 30th is an important date because 5 years ago, a small group of concerned Filipino American youths gathered together to officially form the organization AnakBayan (AB) Seattle. AnakBayan is a Filipino American organization that organizes and educates Filipino American youths and students about the ongoing struggle of Filipinos both in the homeland and abroad. Though this organization was originally formed in the Philippines, it currently has chapters in Seattle, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Oakland, and New York City. Since our birth 5 years ago in the historic International District, we have sponsored youth-led trips to the Philippines so that U.S.-born Filipino youths can connect their identity to youths in the Philippines and have facilitated many educational discussions about Filipino American history and various youth issues. AB has also collaborated with the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) to form the Filipino Seattle Teens and Resources (FILSTAR), which offers tutoring opportunities for immigrant Filipino youth, currently an underserved sector of our community who face racism, discrimination, language barriers as well as socio-economic hardships that many immigrants face in the US. Additionally, AB is currently active in various local campaigns including Equity and Justice for Filipino WWII Veterans & Defend Filipino Progressives. International campaigns include U.S. military out of Iraq and the Philippines, Oust GMA and "Stop the Killings in the Philippines."
This date is a major significance in the continuum of American and Filipino history. On this date in 1999, thousands of people converged upon Seattle to protest the Word Trade Organization ministerial talks. United, they proclaimed that the world would not be controlled by unaccountable corporations and government bodies. Of those resisting organizations, the Filipino-led People's Assembly was one of the largest people of color contingents protesting the economic domination of their country by the WTO and other first-world nations.
AnakBayan Seattle would like to invite the local Seattle community and press to join us in celebrating our 5 th year of local community organizing with a cultural event. The list of performers include: Dax & Question, Roger Rigor, Dakota Camacho, Angela Dy , PINAY Choir, multimedia presentations and many more. In addition, members of AnakBayan Seattle, Pinay Sa Seattle, the Arts Kollective, and Philippine-U.S. Solidarity Organization will also give statements of solidarity.
AnakBAYAN Seattle is a collective of Filipino and Filipino Amerikan youth and students who are concerned about the global oppression of our people. We hope to improve our conditions by studying and educating others about the rich culture and proud revolutionary heritage of the Filipino peoples continuing struggle. We also work towards building anti-imperialist unity among all people to expose and oppose U.S. imperialist intervention in the Philippines.
